We continually hear the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics being talked about. School children and higher education students spend years studying these subjects. Some people spend years teaching them or working in them.

But did you know that by survey, when asked what the words like science, engineering, biology, chemistry etc. actually mean, more than 50% of people surveyed cannot actually give an explanation! And that includes teachers and students.

Download this simple, yet powerful, guidebook which explains the meaning of the key words in STEM and where the words come from! Did you know that the word 'engineer' actually comes from the Latin word ingenium which means 'genius, invention'?

Some background history

A fundamental shortcoming of modern education is that students are being taught to memorise information without understanding it. In fact, in many cases, the teachers themselves teaching the science subjects do not know all the meanings of the words either. Same for teachers teaching English and other subjects. (Read my paper on the Decline of Western Education for more detailed information).

Our education systems have become "the blind leading the blind"; just training students to cram information in their heads and regurgitate it during an exam. Of course, this is not education.

A simple way to solve this problem is to take the time to look up all the key words for the subject that one is learning. Take the time to go through dictionaries. Find out where the words come from.

You can start with my Very Useful Guide to Understanding STEM and also work through this free Science Key Word List workbook. All primary school and high-school students should get this workbook. Parents will have fun helping them with it too!
