I am working on adding more and more resources to this website for homeschooling families, or those who simply want to help their children succeed in their current educational programmes and arrangements.
I share what I have found to be workable to develop reading and writing skills (including grammar) and arithmetic skills, and beyond.
Online GCSE and A-Level providers for homeschoolers
COA International is an outstanding online provider of the full Cambridge curriculum making high-quality homeschooling possible from Cambridge primary to advanced (around 7 years to 19 years).
I have teamed up with COA International as I have found its founders to fully embrace the idea of true literacy: teaching real literacy for full comprehension across the entire curriculum, not simply memorising for passing exams. These concepts are applied through all subjects taught including the STEM subjects. COA International also offers scholarships for STEM subjects.
Other provider of specific educational programmes
In 2023, I discovered Clarity Learning Centres Ollie The Elephant functional literacy programme and materials.
Up to fifty percent of the average English sentence consists of what we refer to as simple words. These are words like “and,” “at,” “in,” “to,” and so on. If one were to remove only five of these words from one’s vocabulary one would find it difficult to put together most proper sentences.
The Ollie the Elephant — Learning Made Easy: English Basic Words series is designed to create understanding and literacy in a language.
One of these “simple” words, such as the word “to,” has a minimum of ten distinctly different meanings and uses that are commonly used. Other simple words have many different widely used meanings. Correct knowledge of these words helps form a foundation of literacy and understanding of the English language.
This factor is overlooked in many schools, language-learning programs, and English grammar courses. Confusion about these common words can lead to a child or adult failing in his studies. If one cannot easily understand what one is reading or hearing, learning becomes difficult.
As a homeschooling parent, getting your children through the 164 Ollie the Elephant: English Basic Words series booklets will develop literacy skills in your children which would never have been acquired in a school of today.
